All-inclusive over ALL else

Updated: Feb 27, 2021

Is an all-inclusive resort really worth the hype? Can they really be better than a cruise? Are they even safe?

Yes. To all of the above. The reason there is so much hype around the ever so popular All-inclusive resort vacation is that THEY ARE AWESOME! They are luxurious, indulgent and can fit just about any budget.

Just before expanding the Kidd family we went to an All-inclusive adults only Secrets resort in Mexico. We spent the same amount we would have on a cruise (maybe less by the time you add drinks and an excursion or two) and had a MUCH more romantic and relaxing time.

We knew we were hooked when we were greeted by name at the entrance with cool lavender towels and Champagne. Being a couple of country kids growing up, neither of us had experienced overly lavish vacations. Sure, we’d both been on cruises and stayed in some nicer hotels, but this was next level luxury. The kind of luxury you assume only “rich people“ get to experience.

We tried out all of the resorts restaurants, each themed with a different style of cuisine. Our favorite was the authentic Mexican restaurant, even though they were all delicious. We snorkeled with sea turtles, played volleyball in the pool, did morning yoga on the beach, biked through town on a guided tour, and paddle boarded just off shore. We were living high and enjoying every second of our time in Mexico.

Each night there were shows and entertainment, a club for dancing the night away or simply staying in your room enjoying the jacuzzi on the balcony or ordering room service. Our resort had a team of 20-something year old hosts that made it their job to make sure you were having a good time, hosting games, ordering drinks, sponsoring activities and tours.

The best part about this vacation? On the last day, we packed up our suitcases, ate one last delicious breakfast with the birds and iguanas close by and hopped on our prepaid airport shuttle. We realized that after 6 nights in paradise, doing all the activities and seeing all shows we could squeeze in, we had spent a grand total of $20 since landing. Our friends, who frequented similar resorts, had told us to take some one dollar bills for tipping because most people wouldn’t accept much more than that, and they were right.

We had paid for a vacation and that was it. There was no secondary budget for food or fun. It was already done. It was ALL included.
